Open a Microsoft Word document and compose your message. When you finish your message and are ready to create the merge, go to the Mailings tab. Use the Start Mail Merge drop-down arrow to select "Step-by-Step Mail Merge Wizard." You'll see a sidebar open on the right which walks you through the mail merge process.

You can change the format of a date field in a Microsoft Word mail merge document using switches in field codes. Typically, date formatting problems occur when the source document for the mail merge is an Excel workbook or Access database. Mail merge date fields can only be changed using switches.
If you don't have a mailing list, you can create one during mail merge. If you're using an Excel spreadsheet, format the ZIP Codes or postal codes column as text to preserve any zeros. For more info see Format mail merge numbers, dates, and other values in Excel.
